The headline of this piece is “Sleepy Joe Biden Doesn’t Have a Chance Against Trump,” something you would expect the President, or one of his supporters to say.
But it might surprise you to find out, that those were the sentiments pretty much expressed by Biden’s fellow DEMOCRAT, and 2020 hopeful, Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan. Ryan said in a recent telephone interview that he “doubts that Joe Biden could beat President Trump in a general election because of the former vice president’s low energy.”
The congressman gave his critical assessment of the Democratic front-runner in a phone call last week with Bloomberg.
“I just think Biden is declining,” Ryan said. “I don’t think he has the energy. You see it almost daily. And I love the guy.”
Ryan later tried to walk back his public criticism, saying he thought he was on a fundraising call and not being interviewed by a reporter.
Reporters asked Ryan about his comments again at the New Hampshire Democratic convention over the weekend.
“I’m just saying that it’s unclear sometimes when he is articulating positions. There’s a lack of clarity, and I’ll leave it at that,” Ryan said. “It is a concern you’re hearing from a lot of people in the country. And I don’t think I need to bang out everybody over the head with it. It’s out there.”
Ryan later reiterated his point during a CNN interview on Saturday, rattling off a few examples of Biden recently being “forgetful.”
“There’s a lot at stake,” he said.
Is Biden’s Failing Health an Issue?
Ryan’s unflattering comments came on the heels of a serious health scare for the former Veep.
Biden appeared to have a blood vessel burst in his left eye while recently participating in CNN’s town hall on climate change.
Biden, 76, has long been plagued by health issues. In 1988, he suffered an aneurysm that burst and required him to undergo emergency surgery.
Doctors removed a benign polyp during a colonoscopy in 1996. In 2003, Biden had his gallbladder removed.
He suffers from asthma and allergies and takes a prescription drug to lower his cholesterol. He has also taken medication for an enlarged prostate.
Biden hasn’t disclosed his medical history since 2008, when doctors found he had an irregular heartbeat.
However, despite this and the ongoing mental gaffes, his wife and others close to Biden nevertheless maintain that he is “a picture of health.”
If he were to win the 2020 presidential election, Biden would be the oldest president ever to be inaugurated.
