In one of the most dramatic and disrespectful moments ever seen in a State of the Union address, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tore up a copy of President Trump’s speech!
The impertinent gesture at the conclusion of the speech was probably precipitated by Trump’s refusal to shake the speaker’s hand, which she offered to him as he approached the podium to begin the address.
“It was the courteous thing to do,” Pelosi said about tearing the paper. “It was the courteous thing to do considering the alternative.”
The White House responded with this tweet,
“Speaker Pelosi just ripped up:
One of our last surviving Tuskegee Airmen.
The survival of a child born at 21 weeks.
The mourning families of Rocky Jones and Kayla Mueller.
A service member’s reunion with his family.
That’s her legacy.”
Pelosi largely seemed to avoid looking at Trump throughout the address, instead reading from his prepared remarks and scanning the room.
She and other Democrats stood and applauded only periodically, even as Republicans regularly gave ovations. Pelosi could be seen subtly shaking her head “no” when Trump pledged to protect Medicare and Social Security as well as rejecting his claim that Democrats want to provide “unlimited health care” for undocumented immigrants.
The speech came weeks after the House impeached Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Although he did not mention the word “impeachment” once during his speech, Pelosi’s anger and frustration were probably also fueled by the inescapable truth that Trump will be acquitted today.
