A father in Sonoma County, California drowned to death on Sunday while trying to save his children who were swept out to sea at a local beach.

The 6-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy are still missing, but are presumed dead, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office told KRON.

The father, 40, has not yet been identified to the public. According to reports, he jumped into the water off Blind Beach after large waves swept his children into the ocean, the TV station reported.

The man’s friend and his wife pulled his body from the water around 2:30 pm.

California State Parks is working with the sheriff’s office on the investigation, along with search assistance provided by the California Highway Patrol, the U.S. Coast Guard, Bodega Fire and firefighters from Sonoma County.
