The squirrels in New York City are becoming more dangerous than ever.
“This was an MMA cage match! And I lost!” said Micheline Frederick, who was brutally attacked by a squirrel in her Queens neighborhood last December. The snow was left splattered with Frederick’s blood after the small rodent attacked her.
According to CBS 2’s WCBS-T, multiple other residents in Rego Park have suffered similar attacks since November.
The NYC Department of Health suggested hiring licensed trappers. However, they cannot figure out the reason for the squirrels’ sudden aggressiveness. The CDC says that squirrels rarely carry rabies.
Some squirrel victims have still been treated at the emergency room with precautionary rabies shots. One of those victims is Vinati Singh. She recorded one of the aggressive squirrels hanging out on her mailbox. Singh said that the squirrel has tried to attack her husband multiple times.
“When we leave the house, we have to carry mom’s homemade pepper spray to make sure if it comes at us, we spray it,” one of Singh’s relatives said.
This is not the first time New Yorkers have had to deal with aggressive squirrels. In 2019, Squirrels in New York’s Rockefeller Park in Battery Park City became increasingly aggressive after years of people feeding them bread and hot dogs led them to become hungry, desperate, and aggressive.
The parks department usually records around 30 squirrel-related attacks each year. But in just one week in Rockefeller Park, multiple attacks were recorded.
