Emergency services raced to the Whispering Wall tourist attraction in South Australia’s Barossa Valley on Wednesday afternoon after they were alerted by witnesses.
When they arrived at 4:30 p.m. officers and paramedics found 38-year-old Henry Shepherdson had died and his 9-month-old daughter Kobi had suffered serious injuries.
Police performed CPR on Kobi, but were unable to save her life. Investigators later said the 118-foot fall was a suspected murder-suicide.
Kobi had been in a child carrier when Shepherdson fell from the Whispering Wall, which is located north of the city of Adelaide.
A statement on the South Australia Police (SAP) Facebook page read: “Barossa Police are investigating what is suspected to be a tragic murder/suicide at Williamstown yesterday evening.”
It continued: “When patrols arrived they found a deceased man and an infant girl who was unresponsive, being assisted and given CPR by members of the public. Paramedics arrived and continued CPR on the little girl but sadly, she died at the scene.
“Detectives from Barossa CIB and Major Crime Investigation Branch, along with forensic crime scene investigators attended the scene to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Although a formal identification has not yet been completed police believe the man to be Henry Shepherdson aged 38 and his daughter Kobi Shepherdson aged nine months from the Western Suburbs.”
Investigators added that there was a history of domestic violence between Henry Shepherdson and Kobi’s mother. Officers added they were not looking for anyone else in connection to the deaths.
They added Shepherdson had “lawful access” to Kobi and that she was not abducted.
People who witnessed the fall and tried to help Kobi are being supported by officers, police said in the statement .
Kobi’s mother shared pictures of her daughter with the police, which were then shared on the SAP website.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said it was a “terrible event.”
According to 9News, he said: “My response is one of profound sorrow. Like it would be for all Australians. These are horrific and sadly their not the first of these sorts of terrible and awful events that have taken place.
“It is truly awful. And my heart is profoundly sad at this terrible event and of the impact on the families that are involved, the friends, the trauma of this will be unspeakable.
“And we must continue to just further our efforts to do all we can in these circumstances.”

My heart is broke! This is so sad, why did this have to happen?
This is a great sadness that tears at all parent’s hearts. Covid 19 has destroyed so many people’s lives by job loses, family structure collapse, Country’s falling apart economically, and for those who live by themselves, isolation has been the most destructive emotionally and mentally.
But what could make a father so despondent that he takes his little baby girl’s life and his own? It obviously was something that showed him no future. But why take the innocent life of your child? To get back at his wife? There is where both the husband and wife should have gone to therapy to work those feelings out. Now, a beautiful baby girl is dead because her father couldn’t see a better solution.
All life is precious — your life, your children’s life, your relatives life, and each person should be cherished. If you notice anyone around you showing signs of disturbed emotional behaviors, please contact the Suicide Hotline above so they can get help! Even the slightest change in behavior is a red flag! Help them before they do something horrible to their children or themselves! Be their Earth Angel and get them help!
This is as bad as bad can get. Poor little Kobi is under the loving care of her heavenly father in Heaven and as father, if you can call him that, a burning hell is most likely the outcome. God Bless you and keep you little Kobi.
At the risk of sounding flippant, guess Australia should now outlaw cliffs? Just as they have firearms. Silly huh? People who intend to murder and/or commit suicide will find a way to do it, no matter how many laws the government passes. Heck, murder is already against the law, and so is suicided in a lot of countries. Where there’s a will, there’s a way! It’s just a shame he took the baby with him!!
It is so very sad when a person commits suicide and even more so when they kill a child in the process. This adorable child is now in the arms of Jesus and suffers no more. May our Heavenly Father bring comfort to the family and friends.
God alone has the answer why this happened! The answer is more then 118 feet above everyone’s intellect!Our only help is support through prayer for each one in this family! Do not hate the father! Pray for each one so that their souls can be released & heal! God ALONE judges!🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 Love the Baby with all of our heart as she journeys to heaven & meets Jesus! He will heal her! Forever! Do not try to diagnose the father’s health or motive! No one on earth has the answer(s)! Trust in God!
