South Australia recently updated its Firearms Regulations legislation from 2017 to require all gel blasters to be registered with the state’s police.
Gel blasters are toy guns, similar to airsoft rifles. They shoot “a super-absorbent polymer as bullets.”
Many are claiming that they also have to register some types of Nerf guns because they operate in a similar way to gel blasters. So, if they are used to fire the gel bullets, they are treated like a true firearm.
Brad Phillips has registered his $35 Nerf Mega Big Shock toy gun. He says the laws are outrageous.
“It’s only if you load it with a gel ball then you’ll be breaking the law,” Phillips said.
The new law officially went into effect in October 2020. However, there was a six month amnest to allow for owners of gel blasters to either turn in their gun or get a firearm license.
The gel blasters, which can resemble assault rifels, are only permitted in licensed venues such as paintball facilities.
The new regulation comes after more than 180 accidents involving gel blasters occurred in just two years.
Superintendent Stephen Howard said back in October that it was a common sense decision to track the ownership of these “weapons.”
“Not only do they fire a projectile, but they also look like a firearm of a different category or class,” Howard said.
“People were committing crimes or doing stupid things with them…we shouldn’t wait for someone to be either killed or seriously injured due to an incident involving gel blasters,” he continued. “A lot of people say these are toys, but they’re not toys. These don’t meet the definition.”
“You could threaten someone with a gel blaster, and the person would either be concerned, ‘Am I going to get shot by a gel blaster or am I going to get shot by a real firearm?'” he added.
Something they probably weren’t expecting? Nerf guns to be included in the gel blaster regulation.
