Gary Chambers, a Democrat seeking election to the U.S. Senate, has released a campaign ad in which he burns a Confederate flag and declares that “the remnants of the Confederacy remain” throughout the South.
“The attacks against black people, our right to vote, and participate in this democracy are methodical,” Chambers says. “Our system isn’t broken. It’s designed to do exactly what it’s doing, which is producing measurable inequity. One in 13 black Americans are deprived of the right to vote. One in nine black Americans do not have health insurance. One in three black children live in poverty. It’s time to burn what remains of the Confederacy down.”
Chambers, who is aiming to unseat incumbent Sen. John Kennedy in Louisiana, previously released another ad that features footage of him smoking marijuana.
“I hope this ad works to not only destigmatize the use of marijuana, but also forces a new conversation that creates the pathway to legalize this beneficial drug, and forgive those who were arrested due to outdated ideology,” he tweeted about that ad.
His campaign website describes him as an “entrepreneur” and a “social justice advocate and community organizer.”
U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who serves as chair of the House Democratic Caucus, recently tweeted that “Ghosts of the Confederacy are alive and well.” Jeffries’ declaration appeared to come in response a move by the Supreme Court that will allow Alabama’s new congressional district map to remain in place at least for now.
