Senator for West Virginia Joe Manchin said in a Tweet on Friday that he would be voting for SCOTUS nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson.
Manchin’s popularity increased when he opposed President Joe Biden’s $3.5 trillion infrastructure bill last September, which raised eyebrows from both parties and went viral on social media and news outlets. Gov. Manchin was known as the leading Democrat skeptic of some of Biden’s policies.
Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, 51, was nominated by President Joe Biden to be a judge on the United States Supreme court. Her nomination has divided both party lines, who were given the opportunity last week to question her during hearings.
If elected Jackson will be the first black woman on the high court. She has a long-standing relationship with popular leaders like former President Barak Obama who elected her to Vice-Chair of the US Sentencing Commission in February 2010, and in 2013 appointed her to be Judge of the US District Court for the District of Columbia. President Joe Biden then appointed her in June 2021 to be Judge of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
Jackson has two teenage children and is married to Patrick Jackson, who met at Harvard University three decades ago. She graduated after studying government in 1992, and received her law degree from Harvard in 1996. The SCOTUS nominee is a Washington, D.C. native, but grew up in Florida and graduated high school from Miami Palmetto Senior High School.
