Russia launched a fresh hell across Ukraine Monday with deadly missile strikes on several cities, including the capital Kyiv — a horrifying escalation that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky insisted was trying to wipe his country “off the face of the earth.”

At least 81 cruise missiles were fired at eight regions by mid-morning, only around half of which were shot down, according to Ukraine’s defense ministry.

Explosions were reported in Lviv, Ternopil and Zhytomyr in Ukraine’s west, Dnipro and Kremenchuk in central Ukraine, Zaporizhzhia in the south and Kharkiv in the east, many hitting at rush hour.

In Kyiv, distressing images caught blood-soaked citizens walking through still-blazing streets in the historic old town that is home to several government offices — with one giant crater just feet from a playground.

At least eight people were killed and 24 were injured in just one of the strikes on Kyiv, which had been relatively untouched in recent months.

Zelensky insisted that Russia deliberately timed the attacks “to inflict the most damage.”

“They are trying to destroy us and wipe us off the face of the earth,” the president said. “The air raid sirens do not subside throughout Ukraine. There are missiles hitting. Unfortunately, there are dead and wounded.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin later said the strikes were a justified response to Kyiv’s “terrorist attacks,” including an attack on a bridge to the Moscow-controlled Crimean Peninsula early Saturday.

He promised further bloodshed that would be “tough and proportionate to the level of threats.”

However, Ukraine Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that “this nonsense about Putin being ‘provoked’ must stop. He does not need anything to ‘provoke’ him in order to commit heinous crimes.”

“Putin’s only tactic is terror on peaceful Ukrainian cities … Putin is a terrorist who talks with missiles, insisted Kuleba, broke off his Africa tour and headed back to Ukraine,” he continued.

The morning strikes sent Kyiv residents back into bomb shelters for the first time in months. The city’s subway system stopped train services and made the stations available once more as bomb shelters.

Distressing images from there showed the body of a man in jeans in a street at a major intersection, surrounded by flaming cars. In a park, a soldier cut through the clothes of a woman who lay in the grass to try to treat her wounds. Two other women were bleeding nearby.

More volleys of missiles struck the capital again later in the morning. Pedestrians huddled for shelter at the entrance of metro stations and inside parking garages.

Video also showed a missile hitting a bridge in the capital.

Ukrainian media also reported explosions in a number of other locations, including the western city of Lviv that has been a refuge for many people fleeing the fighting in the east, as well as in Kharkiv, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, Zhytomyr and Kropyvnytskyi.

Kharkiv was hit three times, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said. The strikes knocked out the electricity and water supply. Energy infrastructure was also hit in Lviv, Regional Governor Maksym Kozytskyi said.

Three cruise missiles launched against Ukraine from Russian ships in the Black Sea crossed Moldova’s airspace, the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nicu Popescu complained.

    1. Who needed it most ?
I think it’s the Ukrainian Leader still seeking Aid because of his ambition
with no ammunition being a Nationalist and not
considering the reduction of the peoples in his Country.

  1. Just give Ukraine some offensive weapons, like long range guns, and let them shoot inside Russia. Do you reckon the Russian people will put up with that?

  2. A war of tick for Tack could have ended if Ukrainian leader so called President was a humanitarian and wanted to save the lives of his people in lieu of being an arrogant
Nationalist responsible for the retaliation by Putin and pleadings for aid from other
Countries for more and more weapons because of his
    ambition with no ammunition.
Stop the War and loss of innocent life by stopping the
    proud Nationalist before no
Ukrainian citizenship or Jew he is also responsible for remains to his shame playing a game.
