Kari Lake and her supporters have honed in on claims of a rigged election following her loss against Democrat Katie Hobbs in the Arizona governor’s race. This is causing further trouble for the GOP which is trying to move forward from the disappointing midterm election for the party.
Republicans widely consider that the sustained allegations of a rigged election in 2020 have hurt the party’s performance in the midterm elections. The GOP failed to win the Senate and while it is projected to win the House, it will do so with a narrow margin. Unsubstantiated claims regarding fraud and rigged elections have become central to the party, ever since former President Trump first made them in 2020.
Lake has now made similar claims about her midterm elections. Claims that Trump himself has backed it while also noting once again that his own election had been “stolen” in 2020.
Brian Seitchik, an Arizona-based GOP strategist has said that Lake’s loss is the most detrimental loss to Donald Trump. Lake was a quality candidate who could connect with voters and yet even she was unable to flip the state. This would be a huge disappointment for Trump.
Lake is only not the only pro-Trump candidate to have lost the elections. Arizona Republican Senate candidate Blake Masters lost against incumbent Sen. Mark Kelly (D). Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano (R) and Maryland gubernatorial candidate Dan Cox (R) also lost their races.
Similarly, several election-denying candidates for secretary of state in battlegrounds like Arizona, Nevada and Michigan all lost their elections despite having Trump’s support.
