President Biden has defended his choice to not visit the U.S.-Mexico border during his recent visit to Arizona. As he notes “there are more important things” to do while there.

This remark came from Biden as he was boarding Marine One in order to depart the White House on Tuesday. Throughout his presidency, Biden has not visited the border despite the ongoing reports about record numbers of illegal crossings in the past year.

Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy questioned Biden on his decision to visit a border state but not the border.

Biden responded by defending his choice by saying ” there are more important things going on.” Biden responded.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also dismissed the remarks made by Republicans that the border visits were a “political stunt”.

In October alone there were 230,000 border encounters according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This marked a new record, breaking the previous record set in September. Throughout the time that Biden has been in office, there have been a record number of illegal immigrants encountered at the border.

During the 2022 fiscal year, the total number of encounters was 2,378,944. This does not include the 599,000 “gotaways” that CBP has reportedly evaded capture.

The Biden administration has insisted that the border is secure and that the surge in migrants is just a yearly pattern. However, the increase in migrant encounters in the spring of both 2021 and 2022 was far larger than the one justified by the patterns set in previous years.
