Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) blasted Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) on Sunday dubbing her a “corporate Democrat” who “sabotaged” party priorities through her announcement that she would exit the Democratic party and would instead become an Independent.
During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” with co-anchor Dana Bash, Sanders said that Sinema was a corporate Democrat who along with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) decided to do what she could to block some important legislation from passing.
Sinema originally announced that she would be leaving the party on Friday. Since then there have been many outraged by this decision especially as the announcement came three days after Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) won reelection and ensured a 51-49 Senate majority.
Sinema is set to retain her committee assignments through the Democratic caucus. This will allow the party to keep its control of the Senate in a more powerful way than a 50-50 split allowed them to.
However, this also means that the Democrats will need to consider who their next candidate is going to be for the 2024 Senate elections in Arizona.
Sinema has not yet disclosed whether she would seek reelection. However, there are rumors that Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) or another progressive would challenge Sinema for her position.
