Independents had been key in Joe Biden’s success in the previous presidential elections, however, according to current polls, many of those independent voters are considering a GOP candidate instead of Biden. According to several polls, independents have been shown to prefer Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for the White House in 2024 instead of Biden.
The conservative media company InteractivePolls compared four different polls that asked the question “Biden or DeSantis?”
In a Harvard/ Harris Poll, DeSantis gained 39 percent of the respondent’s support while Biden only had 32 percent. A Yahoo/YouGov survey showed an even greater difference with DeSantis leading against Biden by 19 points.
However, Cal Jillson, a professor of political science at Southern Methodist University, warns against reading into these polls too much, saying that at this early stage most voters are likely just thinking they would like “somebody other than Trump and Biden.” Jillson also noted that they want to see someone do better than Biden and Trump had done and currently DeSantis is one of the clearest alternatives available.
Last month, one week after the 2022 midterm elections, former President Trump also announced that he would be running for the White House again. Still, his reputation with conservatives has been declining in recent months. In the meantime, DeSantis has emerged as a potential leader of the party and many online would like to see him be the GOP nominee.
In a recent Suffolk University/ USA Today poll, DeSantis was in the lead in a hypothetical battle for control of the GOP.
