Former President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his belief that the Democrats were leading a witch hunt following the two subsidiaries of the Trump Organization being convicted on Tuesday of tax fraud and other financial crimes in a trial that took place in a New York City court.

In a statement shared by multiple media outlets, Trump called it a “MANHATTAN WITCH HUNT!” He added that he was disappointed to have seen the verdict, but that he was going to be appealing it. Trump also questioned the practices of the New York City court as he noted that at a time when crime rates in the city are exceptionally high “the Government was able to get an employee to ‘plea’ in order for a very reduced sentence.”

This comment was made in reference to former chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg, who pleaded guilty to charges of book manipulation which illegally allowed him to reduce his taxes on $1.7 million. Pleading guilty allowed him to have a reduced five-month prison sentence.

Weisselberg, 75, testified that he did everything out of “personal greed”. In the closing arguments, defense attorney Michael van der Veen maintained that this case was not about Trump but rather about “Weisselberg and two corporate entities that did not commit crimes.”

Trump in his statement maintained that he and his family were unaware of Weisselberg’s actions which allowed him to commit tax fraud.
